Dorchester Park closed due to blue-green algae bloom

Residents in the Whitney Point area will have to look to beat the heat somewhere else.

The beach at Dorchester Park has been temporarily closed to the public.

The closing is due to the discovery of a blue-green algae bloom.

Officials from the Broome County Health Department say that the algae can cause itchiness of the eyes and skin if exposed to for an extended period of time.

They also say that if it is ingested it can cause nausea and diarrhea.

The beach will be able to re-open to swimmers 24 hours after the algae is no longer visible.

The health department currently has no official timetable.

Other county beaches in the area that remain open for the holiday week include Greenwood and Cole Parks.
