Deputies have arrested a man they say is in the United States illegally after he tried to strangle his wife.
The Broome County Sheriff’s Office arrested Kevin Paiz-Figueroa, of Binghamton, on Monday evening after an investigation into a dispute between him and his wife.
Deputies say Paiz-Figueroa became angry when his wife confronted him with evidence of marital infidelity.
They say Paiz-Figueroa kicked her and then grabbed her from behind in an attempt to choke her.
Deputies say he used a belt to try to strangle her, but was deterred when his wife fought back.
The wife called 911, and Paiz-Figueroa drove away, but was stopped by a deputy who was responding to the scene.
Deputies say the couple’s infant child was in a nearby crib watching the dispute.
Deputies say an investigation determined that Paiz-Figueroa was not a citizen and is in the United States illegally.
Border Patrol issued an immigration detainer to hold him for deportation proceedings.
Paiz-Figueroa is charged with the following:
- Attempted Criminal Obstruction of Breathing, class B misdemeanor
- Harassment, a violation
- Endangering the Welfare of a Child, a class A misdemeanor
He was arraigned in the Town of Chenango Court, and was taken to the Broome County Jail without bail.
