Copper thief sentenced to more than 12 years in prison

A man who caused extensive damage to vacant homes in our area is going to prison for more than 12 years.

34-year-old Manani Oliveras of Binghamton was found guilty in January of breaking into residences in Endicott and Dickinson and stealing copper pipes to sell for scrap.

Investigators believe he was also responsible for a rash of similar burglaries of for-sale or foreclosed homes around Greater Binghamton.

The thefts in many cases resulted in significant water damage to the structures.

Oliveras was discovered with several duffel bags filled with copper piping when he was arrested last June.
