Students at Chenango Gymnastics were among the top ranks as they recently competed in the USA Gymnastics New York State Championships.

The event was held two weeks ago at SUNY Brockport where a number of Chenango’s students took the top prize, including 2 state champions and a number of top 8 finishers.

They’re instructed by coach Jeff Sabol.

They compete in six events including the bars, vault and floor, with 500 athletes competing.

11-year old Jimi Cook is a state champion, winning 1st place all around for level 5, and has only been competing for 2 years.

He says this year he did everything it took to win.

“Last year, I finished 8th place all-around. It was a surprising moment when they called me up for 1st place. I was excited and my thumb was bleeding. So I was saying that I needed a towel,” said Cook.

Cook, along with 11-year old Landon White, have qualified to move onto a regional competition next weekend.

White, who finished 4th overall in states, says he’s excited to see how he stacks up against other gymnasts around the region.

“I’m really looking forward to see how good the others are.  I’ve never been to a regional competition.  I want to see what the others can do,” said White.

Nearly 20 boys are on the team with ages ranging from 7 to 14.

Cook is the first level-5 overall state champion from Chenango Gymnastics since the early 2000s.

The regional competition will be held in New Jersey.
