Broome County wins a $1,125,000 grant from the New York State Department of Health to combat cancer.

The money will be spent in Broome County and the Town of Owego in Tioga County on three strategies related to preventable cancers.

  1. Educate the public, and especially young people, about the link between ultraviolet radiation from the sun or tanning beds and skin cancer.
  2. Work with local employers to allow their employees to use paid time to get screenings for breast, cervical and colorectal cancers.
  3. Encourage kids to get the human papilloma virus or HPV vaccine.  HPV is a cause of cervical and other cancers in women and men.
