The Broome County Arts Council unveiled the recipients of the 2019 United Cultural Fund grants today.
Nearly $228,000 was awarded to 23 local arts organizations.
Six larger entities including the Binghamton Philharmonic, EPAC, Roberson and for the first time LUMA received larger grants to support operational costs.
Seventeen community non-profits and individual artists such as the Binghamton Community Orchestra, Kopernik, and the Phelps Mansion Museum each received a thousand dollar grant.
Arts Council Executive Director Nancy Barno Reynolds says the arts help to shape a community’s personality. “As somebody who’s lived here her whole life, raised a family here and worked a variety of different jobs I’d say it’s a primary reason for being here. What we have out in the other room, the recipients, are unique to Broome County and nowhere else.”
Reynolds says this is the first time in more than 5 years that the council has raised more money for the fund than the year before.
She says, last year the UCF grants returned more than $3 million to Broome County’s economy.
