Congressman Anthony Brindisi is pushing a plan he believes will reduce the number of robocalls coming to your home lines and cell phones.
Brindisi says he’s heard numerous complaints about the proliferation of spam calls looking to sell extended warranties, supplemental Medicare policies, mortgage refinancing or calls in a foreign language.
The freshman Democrat says the calls are not only a nuisance but can be scams, many targeting seniors.
He’s supporting an effort at the Federal Communications Commission to extend enforcement of the Truth in Caller ID rule to apply to calls originating outside of the US
Brindisi says, “That’s how they’re able to do it right now. Even if you signed up for the Do-Not-Call list, they then move their operations overseas and they’re able to call into the country. This really gives them the authority to go after some of those companies that are overseas.”
Brindisi is also co-sponsoring legislation that would establish an interagency task force to find a solution to the problem.
