Blue pinwheels in recognition of child abuse prevention

Blue pinwheels have sprouted up around our area in recognition of Child Abuse Prevention Month.

Members of the Binghamton Noon Rotary helped to plant some in the roundabout and other locations in downtown Binghamton today.

Christine Battisti is the Director of Client Services with the Crime Victims Assistance Center.

She provided the pinwheels that are meant to represent a happy childhood.

Battisti says the Child Advocacy Center at C-VAC sees roughly 200 children a year who have been victims of sexual abuse, domestic violence or serious physical injury.

She hopes the pinwheels spark some conversation. “To get people talking about child abuse, what it looks like, how you can help.  I would encourage people not just to have that mindset to raise your own child, but to help with your neighbor’s child and have that community approach.”

Battisti says the Advocacy Center plants one pinwheel outside C-VAC’s offices in Binghamton for every child they’ve served in the previous year.

She says other groups such as Catholic Charities, the Mothers and Babies Perinatal Network and the JC Rotary also put them on display.

If you’d like some pinwheels delivered to your business or organization, call C-VAC at 607-723-3200.
