As Lent began with Ash Wednesday, some people participated on the go.
Two local Churches, Redeemer Lutheran in Binghamton and Christ the King in Vestal held its annual Ashes to Go.
Representatives from the churches were at the University Plaza from 9 to 11 and then in front of Redeemer from 1 to 3 offering ashes to people who walked by or pulled up in their cars.
They were also distributing free bag lunches for those interested.
Deacon Judy Mica-Guerin from Redeemer Lutheran says while not everyone has the time to go to mass on Ash Wednesday, everyone should have the opportunity to participate. “The community response has been actually pretty surprising. A lot of people have stopped, a lot of people get prayers along with ashes. Some people just want the sandwiches, some people want the prayers, some people want the ashes, some people want all 3. It’s really an awesome experience.
This is the 3rd year the 2 churches have taken part in Ashes to Go.
Mica-Guerin says that last year they had around 125 people participate in the event.
