The world’s most famous giraffe family has welcomed in its newest member.
April the giraffe gave birth to her second male calf on Saturday at Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville.
The calf began emerging at around 11 am and arrived on the ground about an hour and 45 minutes later.
That’s compared to the 3 hours it took April to deliver her last calf, Tajiri.
Animal Adventure is now home to 5 giraffes.
Owner Jordan Patch says the newborn will eventually be moved to a different site to help spread genetic diversity.
He says it’s an exciting time for the park but at the same time essential for giraffes everywhere. “Every giraffe calf that is produced in the captive management program is needed right now. Giraffe wild populations are plummeting still and these bloodlines are what hopefully what will someday repopulate natural territories should we be able to stop hindering and encroaching on them.”
A naming contest will be held for April’s newest baby boy.
People can go to NametheGiraffe.com and, for 1 dollar a vote, select their favorite name.
Proceeds benefit Giraffe Conservation Initiatives and Ava’s Little Heroes which helps to support sick children locally.
Fans will be able to meet the new giraffe when the park opens for the season on May 1st.
