Greater Binghamton has 74 new citizens.
The American Civic Association organized a naturalization ceremony inside the domed Broome County Courthouse in downtown Binghamton today.
The new Americans came from 40 different countries from Guatemala to Guyana and Panama to Pakistan.
One notable new citizen is the ACA’s own Regina Pereira who serves as Executive Assistant to the Director.
After years of helping to organize the citizenship ceremony, Pereira, her husband and daughter were all able to take the oath themselves today.
Regina Pereira says, “I’m feeling on top of the world. I can’t express myself, I’m so happy. I’m happy for me, my family, my husband, my daughter and, of course, everybody else. Great place to be in.”
Pereira’s daughter Renelle sang the national anthem and later joined the Southerntiersmen for a rendition of God Bless America.
After the ceremony, the ACA hosted a reception for the new citizens and their families at its headquarters on Front Street.
