The Vestal Elks Lodge is helping to make Christmas more special for a large group of children whose families are going through difficult financial times.

Elks members brought hundreds of gifts to Catholic Charities Youth, Family and Community Services center in Binghamton. Catholic Charities will distribute the gifts to families who are clients. Kids put in requests with Catholic Charities, which the organization shared with the Elks. In some cases kids wanted toys and sports equipment. Other requests were for underwear, socks and sheets for beds.

"We're a charitable organization and we really like to give back to the community whatever we can. This is, we feel, one of the more important things in the area to take care of," said John Gardner.

125 children will be getting gifts thanks to the Elks. In some cases, Elks members families directly purchased items. Other gifts were brought with money the Lodge received through fund-raisers. Catholic Charities thanked the Elks on the kids behalf.

"We have people on standby to bring the gifts today and we are all very excited. This is the best part of Christmas, to give to other people so we're very excited to do this. We look forward to it every year," said Mary Whitcombe.

Vestal Elks have been helping out Catholic Charities for the past four years.
