Traditions Seeks Public Help for Casino Proposal

The owners of Traditions at the Glen are going to extra lengths in seeking community support in their bid for a casino license.
The owners of Traditions at the Glen are going to extra lengths in seeking community support in their bid for a casino license.

Traditions has set up an informational kiosk at the Oakdale Mall near Radio Shack. Staff as well as members of the Walsh family who own the golf course and resort in the Town of Union are answering people's questions about their casino proposal. And they're encouraging people to sign a petition in support of their application.

Matt Walsh says that while the siting committee is expected to base 70 percent of its decision on economic factors, 20 percent is tied to local support. And that's what prompted the trip to the Mall.

"A great place to engage with the community. There's a lot of traffic here. And educating the public and informing them on this situation is key. So, what better place than the Mall at the holidays?" asked Matt Walsh.

You can also sign the petition or send a form letter to local state representatives at the website ThinkBigReallyBig.com. So far, Walsh says they've received over 1,000 petition signatures, had a thousand letters sent and have 1,700 likes on their Facebook page.

Traditions recently held a community meeting to address concerns among neighbors. It will hold another open house on Friday December 20th from 5 to 8 p.m. in its ballroom. The Walshs have also announced the creation of a Traditions Foundation.
