Organizers of the Thanksgiving Day Community Dinner at Binghamton High School are making preparations for this year’s annual event, now in its 19th consecutive year. Last year’s expansion of the dining room and creation of a shuttle bus service (courtesy of First Student), enabling those with transportation concerns to attend the popular holiday dinner, proved very popular and will continue for the 2014 dinner. The all-volunteer dinner is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, November 28th at the Binghamton High School’s two main cafeterias located at 31 Main Street.
The dinner is funded through community donations and fundraising by the students of the Binghamton High School National Honor Society. Each year, BHS students, staff and others spend the holiday preparing and serving a full-course Thanksgiving dinner to thousands of local residents. As initiated in 2012, with the addition of our expanded dining room along with our continuous shuttle bus service, home delivery and “take home” meals will not be a part of the annual dinner.
“Thanksgiving in Binghamton is an event everyone looks forward to. It is a time to come together as a family and as a community in support of each other.” said Binghamton City School Superintendent Dr. Marion H. Martinez.
School officials are working with First Student to expand shuttle-bus options, with plans to set pick-up and drop-off points at more convenient locations around the city. A complete bus shuttle schedule will be announced very soon.
“Last year was the first year that we served all meals exclusively at BHS, it was a great success. Bringing the community together with our students and staff made for a great holiday meal. By serving dinner in our facility we are able to provide a safe and delicious meal to all who join us. I look forward to our upcoming dinner.” said Patrick Walsh, Binghamton High School food service supervisor.
