Students at Horace Mann Elementary in Binghamton were treated to a mid-day concert by a string trio from the Binghamton Philharmonic.

The musicians played some holiday, Disney and other classical selections on the violin, viola, cello and guitar. The program was sponsored by the Mann Booster Club.

Philharmonic Director Heidi Kelley says this is the first of what she hopes will be many future performances in local schools. Kelley says the instructional program is intended to help offset cuts to music and arts education.

"Most of my musicians want to be in the schools. They know the need, they see the desire for kids to want be in music. So, they're very, very excited to be a part of this," said Kelley.

This Saturday, the Philharmonic will host its annual Christmas Pops Show at the Forum in Binghamton. And Kelley says the show is nearly sold-out.

Joining the orchestra at times will be soprano Jill Gardner, three choirs, a steel drum band and even Santa. Tickets start at $20 for adults, $10 for kids. To purchase, go to BinghamtonPhilharmonic.org.
