State of the State Draws Focus on Tourism in NYS

The Greater Binghamton Chamber of Commerce says Governor Andrew Cuomo's focus on tourism is very beneficial for New York State.
The Greater Binghamton Chamber of Commerce says Governor Andrew Cuomo's focus on tourism is very beneficial for New York State. In the Governor's State of the State Address, he said that tourism has increased by billions of dollars in recent years.

The Governor has proposed investing in new signage for many communities to try to encourage drivers on main thoroughfares to get off and see attractions. That signage is already being used around Greater Binghamton thanks to grant money secured more than 10 years ago. However, Chamber President, Lou Santoni, says his agency will continue pushing tourism for our area.

"The I Love New York program is probably the most successful tourism marketing program in the world. We've been a part of this for more than 30 years. We actually receive dollars each year as part of that program. As I said, it's a matching funds program, so we take a portion of our budget, put it into a pot of money that the State matches and they give us a dollar limit and then we use that for certain designated ideas and programs," said Santoni.

Some of that money is spent on travel guides, trade show participation and other forms of advertising.
