The New York State leader of the American Legion visited our area recently to thank members for their support of the organization's charitable efforts.

Department Commander Ken Governor stopped at the Veterans Monument in Endicott. He was joined by the state leaders of the Legion Auxiliary and the Sons of the American Legion. The Legion has been raising funds for those injured in combat and the children of those killed. It also has a fund for veterans impacted by Hurricane Sandy. Governor says members can be proud of the work done by the Department of New York.

"It was the American Legion Department of New York that stood up and said, 'We'll pay those funeral expenses and travel expenses for any New Yorker killed in action' when the government refused to do so during the shutdown," said Governor.

During a luncheon at Post 1700 in West Endicott, Governor presented Barbara Beebe with the Department Commander's Award of Excellence for her exemplary service on behalf of the American Legion.
