STAR Tax Credit Requires Reapplication

Here is a reminder that homeowners need to reapply for the STAR property tax exemption this year.
Here is a reminder that homeowners need to reapply for the STAR property tax exemption this year.

The state is auditing the school tax bill relief program, because some people were trying to take advantage of it by claiming the exemption on two properties at the same time. Typically, homeowners in Broome County save about $700 a year on their school taxes through STAR. So far 81 percent of eligible people have reapplied.

"We want to make sure we get to 100 percent, so we've got 19 percent out there who have still not signed up for this valuable tax credit and we want to make sure that you do," said executive Debbie Preston.

Homeowners who have less than $500,000 a year coming into their households should have received a reminder by mail. You can find out more information about reapplying by logging onto tax.ny.gov or by contacting your local assessor's office.
