Report: FSU QB Winston connected to on-going investigation after sexual assault claim

Florida State University star quarterback Jameis Winston is connected to an on-going investigation into a sexual assault claim made by a woman in December of 2012, according to the Tallahassee Democrat.
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - Florida State University star quarterback Jameis Winston is connected to an on-going investigation into a sexual assault claim made by a woman in December of 2012, according to the Tallahassee Democrat.

Winston was never charged or interviewed in the matter, but the case was handed over to the state attorney's office on Wednesday and for now, the case remains open and active.

FSU released a statement in response to the news, acknowledging the school is aware of the matter and can't comment because of the nature of the investigation.

FSU Associate Athletic Director Rob Wilson added that there is no change in Winston's status, so he will play Saturday against Syracuse University. In the meantime, he says they hope the matter will get resolved.

The police report does not specifically identify Winston, as all the names have been blacked out.

The Heisman front-runner did meet with reporters for his scheduled weekly appearance on Wednesday, but he refused to answer any questions about the matter.

ESPN Radio's Chris McManus asked SU Director of Athletics Daryl Gross about the situation Wednesday night.

“I have to imagine Florida State has known about that for a long time and there’s privacy acts and all kinds of things to protect all parties involved. Eventually, when you have an investigation going on, those types of things leak out and get sensationalized or could be accurate,” Gross said. “It’s tough on the student-athlete. It’s tough on whoever made the allegations. All those things come into the fold and you hope they get figured out.”

More information on the story is available at the Tallahassee Democrat's website.
