The 22nd Congressional District of New York is the first in the nation to give special recognition to recipients of the Purple Heart.

Congressman Richard Hanna hosted a ceremony at American Legion Post 80 in Binghamton to mark the Purple Heart Congressional District designation. It's a way to bring awareness to and further honor those servicemen and women who have been injured or killed in defense of our country. Hanna encourages all active duty military and veterans to seek out the benefits and recognition that they've earned.

"Veterans issues are paramount to my office. It's over half of the caseload. We pride ourselves in our ability to be responsive, respectful and react to your needs," said Hanna.

Hanna was joined by Darrel Shanne, Commander of the Central New York chapter of the Military Order of The Purple Heart. Shanne lost his leg in an IED explosion in Afghanistan.
