Prospect Mountain Construction Update

Construction for upgrades along Prospect Mountain have come to an end for the construction season.
Construction for upgrades along Prospect Mountain have come to an end for the construction season.

Regional New York State Department of Transportation Director, Jack Williams, says a lot of progress has been made. Phase 1 of the work to help upgrade Route 17 into Interstate 86 in Binghamton is 55 percent done. Williams says good progress has been made on bridge deck pouring and next year traffic will be rerouted onto new bridges before the old ones are demolished.

"We will be hitting the bridge decks really hard to get traffic up on the new bridge decks, because the existing bridge decks are conflicting with us building any more new structures. So, we've got to get after that as soon as the weather breaks in the springtime," said Williams.

While the construction has wrapped up, some work crews may be along Prospect Mountain patching pot holes or other minor repairs during the winter, weather permitting. Williams also cautions people to watch their speed as they travel through the area.

"We're still in a work zone situation. We still have work zone speed limit. Lanes are narrower than they typically are on an interstate. They're 11 foot wide, the shoulders aren't as wide as they normally are," said Williams.

Construction will start back up within a few months, weather permitting.
