Police Academy Graduation

Our region has 29 new police officers.
Our region has 29 new police officers. The City of Binghamton has the most recruits in the class with 16.

One of them is Officer Daniel Barta. His father was a Binghamton Police Officer who was killed in the line of duty in the early 1990's. For the past 8 months, the group of men and women have been in a grueling academy to test them physically and psychologically.

"They actually do simulated shoot-outs, learn how to stop vehicles, defensive tactics, how to take people down to combat them if they have to, if it comes into a fight situation. That's a big part of their training," said Sheriff David Harder.

Graduates from the Broome County Sheriff's Law Enforcement Academy Class will also be members of Binghamton University's police squad, Ithaca College, the Johnson City and Norwich Police Departments and the Broome and Chenango County Sheriff's Offices.
