NYSEG and RG&E Boost Refrigerator Recycling Incentive to $50

From NYSEG:

NYSEG and RG&E, subsidiaries of Iberdrola USA, will now pay $50 to customers who recycle old, energy-wasting refrigerators and freezers. Raised from $30, the new incentive encourages people to save energy by replacing outdated refrigerators and freezers.

“This program now provides extra incentives to upgrade refrigerators and freezers that waste energy and money,” said Mark S. Lynch, president of NYSEG and RG&E. “If you participate now you can earn $50 and know that your old unit was safely and responsibly recycled – not sent to a landfill.”

Units from the 1990s and earlier can require as much as three times more energy to operate than newer, more efficient models. Removing these old refrigerators and freezers from the home can save as much as $150 a year in energy costs.

In addition to offering a higher payment, NYSEG and RGE have expanded the program significantly by accepting the primary refrigerator or freezer in the kitchen. In the past, the companies offered rewards for replacing or retiring only the secondary units in a household. To qualify for the incentive, refrigerators and freezers must be 10- to 30-cubic-foot capacity, clean, empty and in working condition.
