New Year's Celebration at Whitney Point

The Village of Whitney Point is getting ready to ring in the New Year with a two day community-wide celebration.
The Village of Whitney Point is getting ready to ring in the New Year with a two day community-wide celebration. The New Year's Eve/Day Event starts tomorrow at noon with free ice skating at an outdoor rink created behind the laundromat. Then, a showing of the movie Despicable Me 2 at the Mary Wilcox Library at 2. Tomorrow evening will be capped off by a fireworks display above the fairgrounds at 9 p.m.

On New Year's Day, there will be a pancake breakfast at the Methodist Church, more skating plus balloons and face painting inside the laundry from 11 to 2. At noon on the first, there will be a parade down Main Street followed by refreshments at the Senior Center. Member of the organizing committee Jim Petrie says this inaugural event is meant to capitalize on the success of a block party held last summer.

"When you have the event like we had in Whitney Point and we had 400 or 500 people come down through town that day, you realize that the community wants to do fun things, to get together and do things," said Petrie.

All of the activities and much of the food is free. Money for the fireworks was raised by the American Legion and through a best chicken wing contest held this month among the Village's restaurants. The fire department, Rotary Club and many local businesses also supported the effort. More information can be found on the event's Facebook page.
