National Influenza Vaccination Week

From Broome County Health Department:

If you haven’t gotten your flu vaccination yet this year, it is not too late. In recognition of National Influenza Vaccination Week (NIVW), December 8-14, the Broome County Health Department will be holding a flu clinic on Thursday, December 12, 2013, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The clinic is open to anyone ages three and up. The cost is $25 payable by cash or check. The health department will bill your insurance if you are 65 years of age or older and subscribe to traditional Medicare Part B, Excellus Medicare Blue PPO, Today’s Options or CDPHP Medicare

NIVW is a national observance established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to highlight the importance of continuing flu vaccination through the holiday season and beyond.

“Although flu is starting to circulate in other parts of the country and is geographically sporadic in New York State, we have not had any confirmed cases of flu in Broome County,” said Claudia Edwards, Public Health Director for the Broome County Health Department. “We are hopeful that people will take advantage of this window of opportunity and get vaccinated before flu activity starts to pick up, which is sure to happen in the coming weeks.”

Since it takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop in the body that protect against influenza virus infection, it is best that people get vaccinated so they are protect before influenza starts spreading in their community.

Flu viruses are constantly changing. Each flu season, different flu viruses can spread, and they can affect people differently based on differences in the immune system. Even healthy children and adults can get very sick from the flu. The best protection against the flu is to get vaccinated annually.
