M&T Bank has wrapped up its annual giving with over $17,000 in grants to fight hunger.

The bank's Southern Tier region announced assistance to nine organizations that help feed the hungry including the Food Bank of the Southern Tier, CHOW and Meals on Wheels of Western Broome. The charities operate and supply food pantries and soup kitchens and deliver meals to the elderly. Regional President Peter Newman says M&T has a corporate philosophy that allows each region to support its own local charities.

"One of the best parts of my job is serving as chairman of our charitable contributions committee. It's 10 individuals who work here with me. We get together and decide which organizations we can support. It's a lot of fun to be able to distribute those dollars to these organizations that we know make such a difference to our community," said Newman.

M&T has 26 branches and 280 employees in the Southern Tier region which extends from Painted Post east through Binghamton and Ithaca to the Cortland and Norwich areas. This year, the region gave over half a million dollars to charity.
