Mental Health Care To Expand

Hospitals in Greater Binghamton will likely be expanding their mental health services in the future as the State moves away from housing some mentally ill people in institutions. Lourdes and United Health Services say they are pleased with the recent news that inpatient psychiatric services will remain in place for adults and children at the Greater Binghamton Health Center.

United Health Services already has inpatient beds for people needing urgent mental healthcare at Binghamton General Hospital. However, it relies on the Greater Binghamton Health Center to help care for patients it releases who still need assistance. UHS also operates an outpatient facility.

Alan Wilmarth is the Administrative Director of Behavioral Health for UHS. He says there are many challenges in operating the services, including financially because the care is expensive and reimbursement rates have gone down. Wilmarth says the State's plan of adding 60 new community residential beds in our area will help transition people from acute care to everyday life.

"Those supported housing beds are extremely important when we're trying to transition patients in a more effective fashion from inpatient to outpatient levels of care. Having those additional community resource beds will give us that extra step in the continuum that we don't currently have," said Wilmarth.

"Keeping the center open allows us to continue to have the capacity here, instead of trying to take care of those people in the wrong place, which would be in emergency rooms or crisis beds in acute care centers," said David Patak.

Lourdes currently operates an outpatient mental health facility, although will be looking at growing its offerings in the coming years.
