13 homeowners in the Village of Greene will be elevating their homes with the hopes of preventing them from flooding again.
13 homeowners in the Village of Greene will be elevating their homes with the hopes of preventing them from flooding again.

The residents spear-headed an effort to secure about $1.3 million of federal funds to help pay for the work. The houses flooded in 2006 and 2011. Village of Greene Mayor Phillip Brown says elevating properties is preferable to buyouts.

"It allows them to remain in their homes, which keeps the tax base here in the Village. There are no buyouts. We're very fortunate to have that," said Mayor Brown.

Many of the homes that will be elevated are on North Chenango Street, which runs along the Chenango River.
