Holiday Weekend At Labrador

Labrador Mountain in Truxton is hoping for plenty of snow this holiday weekend.
Labrador Mountain in Truxton is hoping for plenty of snow this holiday weekend.

The family-owned ski resort in Cortland County had a great start to its season with the early snowfall. But recent warm temperatures have softened demand, even though the mountain still has plenty of snow with a base up to 26 inches. This weekend, it hosts the Ithaca College Invitational ski races including teams from Binghamton and Syracuse Universities.

Owner Sue Wilson says Labrador offers affordable skiing for experts, beginners and in-between.

"We give them a good grooming, good trails for the money. You've got to pay a lot more at other areas compared to what we provide. Best bang for your buck," said Wilson.

Wilson says Martin Luther King Junior Day, which is this Monday, is often the busiest day of the year. Nevertheless, she says lines are never long at the mountain's three lifts. Wilson says brand new skiers can purchase a beginner package, including rentals and lesson, for $25. She says the upcoming Winter Olympics are good for skiing and boarding because it helps to showcase the sport.
