Greek Peak Celebrates New Quad Lift

The new owners of Greek Peak Mountain Resort officially made good on one of their first promises by celebrating the opening of its new quad lift.
The new owners of Greek Peak Mountain Resort officially made good on one of their first promises by celebrating the opening of its new quad lift.

The four seat Visions Express takes skiers and boarders up the mountain in 7.3 minutes with fewer stoppages, nearly cutting the duration in half. The $2.2 million lift was installed by Doppelmayr who says it's the only quad in Central New York, has the only load conveyor in the state, and is the only new lift constructed this season in the Northeast.

A ceremonial completion of the lift included the passing of an Austrian-style bell. Owners John Meier and Marc Stemerman then cut the ribbon.

"People are really happy to get that smooth ride up the hill, to get up faster. I think there's a Wow factor with all of our customers, our season pass holders. We're getting a lot of new skiers and boarders here this last month," said Meier.

"It reaffirms the choices that John and I have made to improve the mountain and make it a better skiers and boarder experience here. To have customers come up to you and say, 'Great job,' it's just really exciting for ourselves and our families," said Stemerman.

The new lift is part of $5 million worth of upgrades that have taken place since Meier and Stemerman bought the business at bankruptcy auction last Spring. They say they're grateful to Visions Federal Credit Union for coming through with financing when other financial institutions backed out. Gerry Walker is Associate V.P. of Commercial Lending at Visions.

"It makes real economic sense. And as the Senator said today, we saved 800 jobs. It's really great for the region, it's good recreation and we believe in Greek Peak and the new owners of Greek Peak," said Walker.

The mountain also has ramped up its snow-making capabilities by building a new pump house, adding three new compressors, 25 new snow guns, wider pipes to carry the water up the mountain and a new groomer. Stemerman says by making more snow, the resort can better withstand fluctuations in the weather. Other upgrades include the new Trax Pub and Grill, new rental equipment and better signage.
