Merlin's on Court Street is exhibiting five pieces from Mariam Yaqub. Yaqub grew up in Pakistan and came to the States to attend college in Rhode Island. She says the pieces show an evolution not only in her style, but in herself as a person.

There's a print of a tea and ink stained picture that includes a poem in her native Urdu language. Her more recent work is abstract, reflecting her more adventurous and spontaneous lifestyle since moving to Binghamton.

"There's certain things where you can just show people and there's certain things you can do and your audience can see it for themselves and see what they want to make of it, which is what I like about abstract work," said Yaqub.

An older pen and ink drawing uses actual Urdu calligraphy to compose a man's portrait. Yaqub will be moving back to Pakistan at the end of this month. Whatever money she makes from selling the pieces on display, she pledges to donate to help fund the education of a girl in Northern Pakistan.
