Stormteam Forecast

There will be some showers and thunderstorms across the Southern Tier on Thursday. The best time for the wet weather will be from mid morning through the afternoon.

Here are the weather headlines for the end of the work week:

· Showers and storms return for Thursday; the best chance will be during the middle of the day.
· Still the threat for a t-storm on Friday but chances are lower than on Thursday.
· The temperature trend for the rest of this week will be upward, warmer.
· A seasonable first weekend of August, but still a chance for some thunder each day.

A trough of low pressure remains anchored over southern Canada Thursday morning. With counterclockwise winds around this system, smaller disturbances are rotating around the bigger, parent storm. One of these smaller disturbances will move through Thursday causing showers and thunderstorms. The timing of this disturbance through New York means the best time for wet weather for us is from mid morning through mid afternoon.

This pattern of cool, wet weather of the Northeast will slowly begin to weaken over the next couple of days as the trough low pressure also loses its strength. The trough looks to stay stationary, and will weaken in place. As the pattern breaks, we will see a slight warm-up as we move through the rest of the week and into the weekend. Our temperatures should be back to normal for Friday, hovering in the low to mid 80s.

The chances for rain will diminish, but won’t go away entirely heading into the weekend. And, with the temperature warming a bit, there is a chance for some isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms. One thing we will watch for the weekend is an area of low pressure down at the ground that will track up the East Coast Saturday. Some of our computer models bring this area of rain as close to us as eastern New York so well keep a close eye on it.

The risk for precipitation stays for the weekend and early next week.
