Upstate Shredding Wins Global Award

An Owego-based company has been named the top scrap recycler in the world.
An Owego-based company has been named the top scrap recycler in the world.

Upstate Shredding Ben Weitsman and Son won the honor last week at the annual Platts Global Metal Awards ceremony in London, England. Platts is a premier international publication for the recycling industry.

The local company has grown into a regional network of scrap yards under the Ben Weitsman name that buys metal from the public.

Upstate Shredding takes metal from the yards and others and reduces it to its component raw materials. That metal is sold to mills across the country, and now, through its new facility at the Port of Albany, it ships metal around the world.

Owner Adam Weitsman says it's a great honor for a smaller, privately-owned company to beat out much larger publicly held firms.

"We're really being strict on environmental awareness. We've been able to increase our volumes here. This year we're already up over 27 percent over last year. We're redoing our facilities, we're hiring a lot of good people locally. I think it's a mixture of things. This is just the beginning of what we're going to do," said Weitsman.

Weitsman says he expects to create a lot more jobs in Tioga and Broome Counties in the coming years.
Once a second shredder is completed near Pittsburgh, the company will have about 500 employees across 18 facilities.
