The Ins and Outs of Composting

Take a look at composting and how you can actually get the broken down material for free from the landfill.
Composting has benefits for both yourself and the county.

For one it keeps yard waste out of the landfill, which is good because creating new space at the site is expensive.

Composted material is also good for around your home.

You can get it for free from the landfill, because it has an ongoing composting program.

"In our case, we allow our residents to take the final compost for reuse. It really is a great addition to any top soil for gardening or things of that nature," said DEbra Smith of Broome County Division of Solid Waste Management.

The landfill collects yard waste, including leaves, brush, grass clippings and small shrubs. Many private haulers and municipalities will pick it up from homes and businesses or residents can drop it off at the Knapp Road facility.

Once the county has enough of it, it will take the material, shred it and lay it out in rows and periodically turn it.

"As the material cooks down, we will turn it every so often. As it continues to break down we will monitor it. Once we feel it's broken down well enough, they take the material and put it through a screening process," explains Smith. "Any large materials that didn't break down adequately go back into the process. The final compost is offered back to our residents for free."

The landfill will soon start keeping a pile of the final product near the scale house, which is does every season. You do need to load it into your vehicle by yourself.

Some people also compost at home.

If you're interested in getting involved, you can buy an 80 gallon capacity composter for only $45 at the landfill. The regular price is $80.

Only cash or checks are accepted.

The Broome County Landfill is at 286 Knapp Rd. in the Town of Nanticoke.

Hours are Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. until 2:45 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. until 11:45 a.m.
