Austin, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Texas starting quarterback David Ash will not play in Saturday's game against BYU after sustaining a concussion in last weekend's season opener.

Longhorns head coach Charlie Strong made the announcement on Monday, with sophomore Tyrone Swoopes to draw his first career start in Ash's place.

Ash played the entire way in Texas' 38-7 victory over North Texas last Saturday but began to experience concussion-related symptoms following the contest.

The junior was medically redshirted last season because of a concussion he suffered in the Longhorns' second game, a 40-21 loss to BYU.

Strong said Ash is still being evaluated by the Longhorns' medical staff and no timetable has been set for his return.

"We will never jeopardize a young man's health in this program," Strong stated.

Ash has started 22 games for Texas and owns a 15-7 career record under center. The 22-year-old completed 19-of-34 passes for 190 yards and a touchdown while also running for a score in Saturday's win.

Strong also revealed during Monday's press conference that senior center Dominic Espinosa fractured his ankle in the opener and will undergo surgery on Wednesday.
