TDS Telecom Upgrades East Broome to Broadband

People living in rural sections of Eastern Broome County now have improved access to high speed internet.

TDS Telecom recently completed upgrades to its infrastructure to offer broadband internet to its phone customers in Deposit, Windsor, Harpursville and Afton.

The two year project cost about $4.2 million with 75 percent covered by a Rural Utilities Service grant.

TDS installed boosters in its system to help internet signals reach more remote destinations like Deer Lake on the border of the Towns of Windsor and Sanford.

The project was initiated by former Broome County Legislator Steve Herz and a committee of concerned citizens.

"We've got people who are working in their homes in their communities now that didn't have this opportunity. It's the same thing as if you've got a highway and no way to get to the highway. Well now they have the ability to get to the broadband high speed internet highway," said Herz.

A lack of internet access hurts businesses trying to compete and students who use the web for their homework.

The expansion is only available in areas served by TDS, but Herz says the successful public-private partnership could be replicated in other places that lack high-speed internet service.
