State Passes Buy From the Backyard Act

State Senator Tom Libous says he's come up with a way to support local farmers while boosting the economy.
State Senator Tom Libous says he's come up with a way to support local farmers while boosting the economy.

This week, the State Senate passed Libous' "Buy From the Backyard Act," which promotes the purchasing of locally grown food.

The bill requires state agencies to assign 20 percent of their total food budget to products from within the state.

State agencies such as mental health facilities, prisons, universities, and state institutions would in turn stimulate the local economy.

Libous says that supporting local farmers and investing taxpayer money back into the state could boost the state's economy by billions of dollars.

The bill has been sent to the Assembly for review.
