Southern Tier Solar Works Continues Installations

Despite the rain and clouds today, it was a great day for solar power supporters.

The Southern Tier Solar Works Program celebrated the installation of another residential system today.

ETM Solar Works placed a large panel array on the roof of Frank and Meredith Bocek's home in Apalachin.

The program was started earlier this year to drum up interest in the alternative energy and generate volume discounts by signing up as many homeowners and businesses as possible.

Program Manager Adam Flint says so far 35 contracts have been signed and others are pending.

"We had this idea six months ago. Around the holiday period, we got together with a few people from Catskill Mountainkeeper, the Natural Resources Defense Council, the Sierra Club and we said, 'Let's do this.' Here we are, it's the beginning of June, and the panels are going up. It's really going well," said Flint.

Through the solar works discount, participants are saving 50 cents per watt which for an average system translates to about $3,500.

Flint says that's on top of state and federal tax rebate incentives that can cover up to 60 percent of the purchase and installation cost.

The Boceks say they recently moved to Apalachin to escape the flooding in Owego.

They feel they're doing their part to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels which leads to catastrophic weather events including our historic floods.

"We have a good size system. It's about 7.8 kilowatt, which is a good sized system. The reason we did that is so that we can get an electric car and we can use this system for our electric car," said Meredith Bocek.

Flint says that while the cost of purchasing panels is going down, many of the tax incentives are being phased out.

He encourages anyone who is interested to contact Southern Tier Solar Works at 873-9220 or at SouthernTierSolarWorks.org.
