Several Groups Opposed to Governor's Proposed Tax Cuts

Several organizations are against Governor Andrew Cuomo's proposed tax cuts.
Several organizations are against Governor Andrew Cuomo's proposed tax cuts.

Ron Deutsch, the executive director of New Yorkers for Fiscal Fairness, recently spoke to a group of members from Citizen Action, unions, the Greater Binghamton Labor-Religion Coalition and others. Deutsch says the governor has proposed tax cuts that will benefit the wealthiest New Yorkers and banks the most.

He thinks the governor should be combating income inequality, child poverty, record levels of hunger and high unemployment instead. Deutsch claims Cuomo misled residents when he proposed revamping the estate tax when Cuomo says it would help prevent some wealthy from leaving New York before they pass away.

"The reality is that simply is not true. Look at, for instance, the governor's own tax reform and fairness commission. They issued a report and looked at this data and basically found people are not moving to die. There is not some mass exodus of wealthy people leaving New York to pass away in Florida," said Beutsch.

Deutsch says the governor's tax cuts will amount to $2 billion, which should be reinvested to help people who actually need assistance. The governor's office didn't return our request for comment by air time.
