Schumer Supports Minimum Wage Raise

There's a push by some members of Congress to raise the federal minimum wage. It is currently $7.25 per hour.

U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer believes that $10 per hour is more reasonable for workers. Opponents say forcing companies to pay more for labor will actually hurt some people as businesses cut jobs to absorb the hike.

"It seems to me that if you work 40 hours a week you should be able to provide some life of dignity and decency to your family. It hasn't been raised in a long time. Right now, it's actually lower in real dollars, buying power dollars, than it was in the '70's and '80's," said Schumer.

A group of liberal members of Congress are urging President Obama to put an executive order in place that would make federal agencies give preference to businesses that pay at least $10 per hour when awarding contracts.
