School bus safety reminder

Parents across our area are preparing to send their kids off to school again over the next two days, and many of them will be riding large yellow school buses.
Union (WIVT) - Parents across our area are preparing to send their kids off to school again over the next two days, and many of them will be riding large yellow school buses.

The association representing school bus drivers in New York State is reminding drivers that traffic heading in both directions must not pass buses with their red stop lights flashing. This includes on divided highways, like the Vestal Parkway, or in parking lots or school driveways.

Lisa Wilson, Union-Endicott's director of transportation said there's a way parents can help as well.

"Parents, it's critical that you have your children ready for the school bus when it gets there. It's also critical that you're there to receive your child in the afternoon because every minute that bus waits or has to go around the block increases the risk of it being passed by a motorist," she said.

The New York Association of Pupil Transportation says 2.3 million children in the state ride the school bus each day.
