Retired Social Services Worker Announces Candidacy for 6th District Seat

A retired Broome County Department of Social Services worker is getting involved with politics.

Carol Howell is running at a Democrat for the 6th district seat, which represents West Endicott, West Corners, and part of the Town of Maine.

Howell worked at social services for 26 years.

She made the announcement at Broome County Democratic Headquarters, Wednesday morning.

Howell said part of her focus will be to improve flood mitigation efforts in her district. She is also opposed to the slated closure of the Broome County Mental Health Clinic in Binghamton.

"I worked, as I said, with a lot of at-risk families and mental health issues don't concern just the person who is diagnosed. There is a ripple effect. It concerns their children, their partners, the workplace, the school and the community at large. There is a cost attached to not having enough services available," said Howell.

The 6th district seat is currently held by Republican David Jensen. He recently announced that he will not be seeking re-election.
