Preston In Charge

Following her Deputy announcement, Preston sought to make something clear: she is still running the county.

Preston has been undergoing chemotherapy for lung cancer which was diagnosed back in April.

While acknowledging that she's gone through some rough patches recently with the treatment, Preston says she is still coming into the office regularly and involved in critical decision making.

She says questions about her leadership are politically-motivated.

"I know there are questions out there. We're getting FOILs; people want to know who's running Broome County. I want to make it clear: I cannot wait for the election to be over because the political crap has got to stop. We've got some serious issues in Broome County and we all need to come to the table," said Preston.

In response, Legislator Jason Garnar says he's never made an issue out of Preston's health concerns, nor does he know of any other Democratic officials who have.

In fact, he says he sent a message of sympathy to Preston explaining that his own grandmother had died from lung cancer.

The County Executive's office would not say who had filed the Freedom of Information Law requests.
