Olum's Celebrates 100 Years

Local dignitaries and business leaders are celebrating 100 years of Olum's.
Local dignitaries and business leaders are celebrating 100 years of Olum's.

The locally owned furniture, appliance, electronics and bedding retailer was started by Jacob Olum on Clinton Street in Binghamton back in 1914.

An Eastern European immigrant himself, Olum sold wash boards and tin wash tubs to other immigrants living in the City's First Ward in the days before washing machines. He also sold furniture and bedding.

Olum's now has an 80,000 square foot store in the Campus Plaza in Vestal and a larger distribution and outlet center in Johnson City.

Former President Gil Rouff says the Olum's legacy is one of fair dealing and honesty.

"A small business can in a town can serve the people who respect the quality of the service that they get. And hopefully will continue through the ages. It certainly is something that I've enjoyed looking at and seeing the growth from a personal standpoint," said Rouff.

Rouff says following the calamitous flood of 1934, Olum extended credit to flood victims.

Many speakers at today's ceremony remarked on how many generations of young couples have furnished their homes using the company's Magic Circle Credit.

As part of the celebration, Olum's is offering a $10,000 home furnishings makeover sweepstakes.
