McIlroy strengthens grip atop the world rankings

<p>Rory McIlroy won his second major championship in a row, and his third consecutive event overall, and he strengthened his hold atop the world golf rankings.</p>

Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Rory McIlroy won his second major championship in a row, and his third consecutive event overall, and he strengthened his hold atop the world golf rankings.

McIlroy led by 0.17 average points last week, but is now 1.99 average points clear of No. 2 Adam Scott.

They remained 1-2 in the rankings and were followed by Henrik Stenson, who inched up one to third and that pushed Sergio Garcia down to fourth. Justin Rose was fifth again this week.

Jim Furyk jumped two to No. 6 and with that Matt Kuchar and Bubba Watson both dipped one to seven and eight. PGA Championship runner-up Phil Mickelson jumped four places to ninth.

Jason Day, Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth all fell one and are 10th through 12th. Rickie Fowler shared third at Valhalla and moved up five places to No. 13. Martin Kaymer fell a pair to 14, while Zach Johnson and Graeme McDowell were down one apiece to 15 and 16.

Dustin Johnson held steady at No. 17 and Hideki Matsuyama dipped two to 18. Jimmy Walker and Charl Schwartzel exchanged places with Walker moving up to 19 and Schwartzel sliding to 20th.
