Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo is promoting the importance of farming to our local economy.

At her request, Cornell Cooperative Extension has prepared statistics that show agriculture generates over $30 million in sales annually in Broome County.

The county's 563 farms on nearly 80,000 acres which accounts for 29 percent of the land mass in Broome.

In addition, Cornell estimates that farms invest $100 million annually each year.

Lupardo says that while the state has recently made great strides in changing regulations to support yogurt, beer, cider and wine, much more can be done.

"Not only are we talking about growers, we're talking about products that can start off as small batches in commercial kitchens, and also can become huge manufacturing opportunities to help revitalize our manufacturing base," said Lupardo.

Lupardo recently convened a local taskforce to find ways to assist farmers in growing their businesses and becoming more efficient.

She's also compiling the results of a survey of local farmers to help identify other ways in which the state can change its rules and laws to help benefit agriculture.
