Lockheed Wins Presidential Helicopters Contract

Lockheed Martin has won the contract to help build the next generation of presidential helicopters.
Lockheed Martin has won the contract to help build the next generation of presidential helicopters.

Lockheed will be working with Sikorsky Aircraft on the $1.25 billion deal for the new Marine 1 fleet.

Sikorsky will build the frame and Lockheed will equip the choppers with state of the art high-tech mission systems.

The contract will mean that Owego's workforce will be at the very least stabilized and in the future more employees could be added, although it's too early to know if that will be necessary.

Employees are eager to get started working on the aircraft.

"The first two test aircraft are scheduled to be delivered to the government near the year 2018. Starting in the year 2015 those two helicopters have planned time slots where they will be in the Owego facility for the work to be done," said Roger Il Grande, director of airborne systems programs.

By 2023, the contract calls for 21 aircraft to be completed.

Within the next few weeks, U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer and possibly Kirsten Gillibrand are expected to visit Lockheed to congratulate it on the contract.
