Lockheed Martin in Owego has secured a $1 billion plus contract to help build a new fleet of combat rescue helicopters.

They will be for the U.S. Air Force.

U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer made the announcement.

He says that the $1.25 billion is just the first phase of funding.

Eventually, the goal is to have Lockheed and its partner Sikorsky build more than 100 of the choppers and the contract could go up as high as $8 billion.

The current fleet of choppers used to get troops out of dangerous situations are 30 years old.

Lockheed equips the aircraft with high-tech missions systems.
