The Jim "Mudcat" Grant All Star Golf Tournament is coming up later this month, and we're taking a look at the local charities it benefits.

The Broome County Urban League has been receiving proceeds from the tournament since the beginning.

Private fundraising is essential to the Urban League to augment the state funding it receives to operate its programs.

Ebony Tutora went to the Urban League as a kid and is now the Program Director overseeing the Work Experience Program and donations for the Urban Star boutique. She said many of the people who come to the program have hidden talents, such as the ability to transform donations for the boutique into one-of-a-kind items.

Tutora said they just need some guidance in transitioning from public assistance to employment.

"Whether it's them going back to school and giving them the confidence they need for that. Or, teaching them how to be responsible, take care of their children and get to the point where they're no longer in need of public assistance. Where they can support themselves, so they have every single tool necessary, that you and I might have, that they didn't get through life. I like to think we're changing the world," said Tutora.

The All-Star Golf Tournament features sports celebrities, including members of the Black Aces, African American pitchers who had 20 win seasons in Major League Baseball.

The tournament takes place August 28 at the Links at Hiawatha.
