A prominent Kurdish artist is holding his first American art show in Binghamton this month.

"When The Body Speaks" is an exhibition of 30 recent canvases by Sardar Kestay. Kestay recently moved to Binghamton. His art has been displayed in Germany, Sweden, Egypt and his native Kurdistan. He typically paints the female body although his work has been growing more abstract. Through interpreter Ezzad Mustafa, Kestay says he finds it difficult to limit his color palette.

"It goes back to my background growing up in a Kurdish family in Kurdistan. If you go inside our house, you will see everything is colorful. And that somehow affected me," said Kestay.

Kestay's paintings are hanging at the Orazio Salati Gallery on State Street in Binghamton. And he'll be at an opening reception with his interpreter, Friday evening from 6 to 9 as part of the monthly Art Walk.
